Defining the Scope, Outcome, and Standing of IEB Accreditation

The International Education Board (IEB) applies a structured accreditation outcome system to clearly define an institution’s level of compliance, quality alignment, and accreditation standing. Accreditation status reflects the results of formal evaluation against IEB’s framework and supports transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

IEB accreditation outcomes are non-comparative and do not constitute rankings.

Overview of Accreditation Levels
IEB awards accreditation under clearly defined levels based on evaluation results, evidence review, and committee decision.

1. Provisional Accreditation
Provisional Accreditation is granted to institutions that demonstrate substantial alignment with IEB standards but require further development in specific areas.
Key Characteristics:

  • Meets essential quality and governance requirements

  • Demonstrates institutional intent and readiness

  • Requires corrective actions or improvements within a defined timeframe

Validity:

  • Granted for a limited period

  • Subject to monitoring and follow-up review

Provisional Accreditation allows institutions to demonstrate quality commitment while progressing toward full compliance.

2. Full Accreditation
Full Accreditation is awarded to institutions that demonstrate strong and consistent compliance with IEB accreditation standards across all evaluated areas.
Key Characteristics:

  • Fully aligned with IEB quality assurance framework

  • Stable governance, academic integrity, and learner support systems

  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement

Validity:

  • Granted for a defined multi-year period

  • Subject to periodic monitoring and review

Full Accreditation reflects institutional maturity and sustained quality assurance practices.

3. Conditional Accreditation
Conditional Accreditation may be granted where an institution meets core standards but presents specific areas of concern that must be addressed within a prescribed timeframe.
Key Characteristics:

  • Accreditation remains valid subject to compliance with conditions

  • Targeted corrective action plan required

  • Enhanced monitoring by IEB

Failure to meet conditions within the specified period may result in status change.

4. Suspension of Accreditation
Suspension may be applied when serious non-compliance, ethical breaches, or failure to maintain standards is identified.
Key Characteristics:

  • Temporary removal of accreditation status

  • Institution required to address deficiencies

  • Use of IEB accreditation claims and logos is prohibited during suspension

Suspension may lead to reinstatement or withdrawal following review.

5. Withdrawal of Accreditation
Withdrawal represents the permanent removal of accreditation status.
Grounds for Withdrawal:

  • Persistent non-compliance with IEB standards

  • Misrepresentation or misuse of accreditation

  • Ethical or legal violations

  • Failure to cooperate with monitoring or review processes

Once withdrawn, institutions must cease all claims of IEB accreditation.

Accreditation Status Communication
IEB communicates accreditation status formally through:

  • Official accreditation certificates

  • Accreditation decision letters

  • Listing in IEB records or directories (where applicable)

Institutions are responsible for representing their accreditation status accurately and responsibly.

Important Clarifications

  • Accreditation status reflects quality alignment, not institutional ranking

  • Accreditation does not imply government recognition or statutory approval

  • Status is subject to change based on monitoring, review, and compliance
